Bone remodeling is a well-balanced process of bone resorption, induced by osteoclasts and bone formationmaintained osteoblasts. Loss of bone remodeling balance, with increased bone resorption, leads to osteoporosis. Bone turnover markers are classified as markers of bone formation and of bone resorption. During the growth and development of skeleton, bone turnover markers show higher levels of activity than in the adult period. The increase in biochemical markers peaks again in the postmenopausal period, indicating accelerated bone remodeling. Bone mineral density is an important predictor of an osteoporotic fracture. Timely assessment of risk factors of osteoporosis and bone markers can detect subjects with accelerated bone remodeling and osteoporosis. This may introduce adequate therapy and prevent fracture.

Biochemical markers in osteoporosis: usefulness in clinical practice.
Currently, the measurement of bone remodeling biomarkers is an innovate proposal in clinical evaluation of patients with osteoporosis. Its use may identify patients at increased risk of fracture as well as monitoring therapeutic efficacy. Because they constitute a relatively inexpensive non-invasive measurement, its use should be widespread for serial and frequent measurements of bone turnover....

Demineralized bone matrix has been successfully commercialized as an alternative bone graft material that not only can function as filler but also as an osteoinductive graft. Numerous studies have confirmed its beneficial use in clinical practice. Heterotopic ossification after internal fixation combined with the use of demineralized bone matrix has not been widely reported. In this paper we de...
متن کاملBone-turnover markers in fracture healing.
Biochemical markers of bone-turnover have long been used to complement the radiological assessment of patients with metabolic bone disease. Their implementation in daily clinical practice has been helpful in the understanding of the pathogenesis of osteoporosis, the selection of the optimal dose and the understanding of the progression of the onset and resolution of treatment. Since they are de...

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common inflammatory arthritis affecting 0.5 to 1% of the general population worldwide. The cause of RA remains unknown. In active RA, bone turnover markers change in serum and urine before the appearance of erosions in radiography. In this study, we compared RA activity index with bone turnover marker levels in serum of RA patients. Methods:...
متن کاملBone strength and management of postmenopausal fracture risk with antiresorptive therapies: considerations for women’s health practice
Bone strength - and, hence, fracture risk - reflects the structural and material properties of the skeleton, which changes with bone turnover during aging and following effective pharmacotherapy. A variety of powerful new techniques (quantitative computed tomography, as well as peripheral quantitative computed tomography and high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography) provide p...
